A new project to extend the Riverfront Trail in Plainfield is underway and expected to be completed in Spring 2023, according to the Village Voice.
The project, which is part of the Riverfront Master Plan adopted by the Village of Plainfield in 2021, will add more than two miles of paved trail segments along the DuPage River, connecting downtown Plainfield to the Springbank subdivision and beyond.
The Riverfront Trail Extension project is a collaborative effort between the Village of Plainfield, the Plainfield Park District, the Riverfront Foundation, and Avanti Properties Group, the developer of Springbank.
The project aims to enhance the recreation and connectivity of Plainfield’s riverfront, which is a valuable natural and cultural asset for the community.
The project will include a variety of features, such as scenic overlooks, benches, interpretive signage, landscaping, lighting, and a paddle craft launch.
The project will also provide access to several parks, such as Mather Woods, Settlers’ Park, and Riverfront Park, as well as to local businesses, schools, and neighborhoods.
“The Riverfront Trail Extension project is a great example of how we can work together to improve the quality of life in Plainfield,” said Plainfield Mayor John Argoudelis.
“This project will not only create a beautiful and functional trail system but also a destination for residents and visitors to enjoy the riverfront and all that it has to offer,” the Mayor added.
The Riverfront Trail Extension project is funded by a combination of sources, including grants, donations, impact fees, and developer contributions.
The project is estimated to cost $3.5 million, of which $1.5 million has been secured so far.
The Riverfront Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the riverfront development, is leading the fundraising efforts for the project.
“We are grateful for the generous support of our partners and donors who share our vision for the riverfront,” said Riverfront Foundation President Bob Kalnicky.
“We are still seeking additional funds to complete the project, and we welcome anyone who is interested in contributing to this worthwhile cause,” Mr. Kalnicky added.
The Riverfront Foundation is hosting a fundraising event on Saturday, April 8, 2023, at the Plainfield Village Hall, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
The event will feature live music, food, drinks, raffles, and a silent auction.
The tickets for this event are $50 per person and can also be purchased online at the Riverfront Foundation or by calling the number on their website.
