LAVALLETTE — The Lavallette School District has developed a corrective action plan intended to address “chronic absenteeism” after school officials became aware that more than 10% of enrolled students are chronically absent — meaning that they have missed an average two or more school days per month. Michael Hajisafari, head teacher at Lavallette Elementary School, presented this corrective action plan to the board of education at its meeting on Tuesday, March 19.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Two Staten Island educators were recently honored for their positive impact on local students with this year’s 2024 Patrick F. Daly Award. Lawrence Hansen, the principal of St. Joseph Hill Academy elementary school, was a recipient of the award. A posthumous award was made to David LaMorte, who was the director of the Tottenville High School marching band for more than two decades and most recently was an assistant principal. He died on Dec. 27, 2023, at 60 years old.
