There is a massive emergency response underway after a freight train derailed in Ayer on Thursday.

Multiple train cars went off the tracks in the area of Sculley Road around 12 p.m., according to the Ayer Fire Department.

“We are working with officials from the railroad, Ayer Police Department, and the Ayer Department of Public Works to mitigate this incident,” fire officials said.

Boston 25 drone video showed at least five train cars toppled over on the ground.

Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency said the derailed cars were carrying trash and recycling, not hazardous materials. Each of the derailed cars were carrying double stacked containers.

It wasn’t immediately clear if anyone was injured.

The public is being urged to avoid the area until further notice.

The cause of the derailment is under investigation.
