DENNIS, Mass. — Authorities have identified a man and a woman who died in a house fire on Cape Cod over the weekend.

Firefighters responding to a report of a blaze on Niblick Road in Dennis just before 7 a.m. Sunday found smoke billowing from a two-story duplex, according to the Dennis Fire Department.

When crews made entry into the home, they found two people and a dog inside. Both people were taken to Cape Cod Hospital, where they were pronounced dead. The dog also perished in the fired.

The blaze started on the second floor of the duplex and there were no working smoke alarms in the home, investigators said.

Cape and Islands District Attorney Robert Galibois identified the victims as 60-year-old Edward Snell and 63-year-old Gina Champ.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

“It’s too early to say how the fire started, but we know there were no working smoke alarms in the unit where it began,” Dennis Fire Chief Robert Brown said. “Please check your smoke alarms today to be sure they’re working properly on every level of your home.”

The State Fire Marshal’s Office and the DA is assisting with the investigation.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
