The main character, Lorraine, takes a job there and finds a world very different from the lobsters-and-lighthouses she had always associated with Maine — a land of abused, angry teenagers, illicit romance, and danger. The novel explores temptation, morality and mental health, and confronting the past, through Lorraine’s eyes and experiences.
