LANDOVER -- As the Urbana girls celebrated yet another team championship Saturday, posing for pictures with the trophy, the Thomas Johnson boys stood not far away in the infield at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex, preparing to douse their coach, Bobby Humphries, with a Gatorade bucket full of ice water after claiming their first state team title in more than a decade.

TEDCO, Maryland’s economic engine for technology companies, announced a recent State Small Business Credit Initiative (SSBCI) investment of $200,000 into Gaithersburg-based Givhero, Inc., a startup company supporting employee health and wellness. This SSBCI investment is from TEDCO’s Social Impact Funds. Givhero’s headquarters are located at 9841 Washingtonian Blvd Suite 200 in Rio Lakefront. “People are connected to causes, deriving meaning, value and motivation when they support a cause they’re connected with,” said Vishal Chintawar (featured photo), founder and CEO of Givhero. “Plus, the workforce is changing and it’s time for employers to change with it by creating new ways to engage with, support, and encourage employees, which is why we created the Givhero platform. Ashburn man arrested after Fauquier County 13-year-old overdoses
An Ashburn man has been arrested following the drug overdose of a 13-year-old Fauquier County girl earlier this week, according to a news release. On Tuesday, the Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call of a 13-year-old female that had apparently overdosed on LSD and psilocybin, or “shrooms.” The overdose was not fatal.

Damascus Man Arrested on Multiple Assault Charges in Montgomery County
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MD – The Montgomery County Department of Police – 5th District Community Action Team has arrested Julio Melendez, a 26-year-old Damascus resident. Melendez faces four counts each of first-degree assault and reckless endangerment. Officers responded to a reported shooting near a 7-Eleven store on the 12100 block of Snowden Farm Pkwy, on Friday, May 12, 2023. The investigation revealed that Melendez, after a verbal altercation with a group of teenagers, pointed a shotgun at the group and made threats. Officers later located Melendez driving a black Ford Explorer in a residential neighborhood. Man convicted in fatal Rockville stabbing spree
Montgomery County Circuit Court juries this week convicted a man for murder and for assault of two victims in Rockville, in a stabbing spree that occurred in September 2022. On Monday, a jury found Scorpio Alexander Stanfield, 32, guilty of first-degree assault for the nonfatal stabbing of one victim, according to the State’s Attorney’s Office. On Thursday, a separate jury convicted Stanfield of second-degree murder of Silver Spring resident Jonathan Lawrence Moore, 35.

Teen Arrested in Connection with Wheaton Metro Station Shooting
GAITHERSBURG, MD – On Thursday, May 18, 2023, Emmanuel Leonard Simmonds, a 16-year-old from Gaithersburg, was arrested and charged with the murder of Tenneson Vaughn Leslie, Jr., an 18-year-old resident of Greenbelt. The incident occurred at the Wheaton Metro station where a physical altercation escalated, and Simmonds allegedly shot Leslie, Jr. on the Metro train platform.
