Baltimore bridge disaster echoes Fassett collapse in 1957
The Francis Scott Key Bridge disaster early Tuesday in Baltimore evokes for some Toledoans the demise of a local bridge that was felled by a wind-blown ship nearly 67 years ago. The Fassett Street Bridge once connected East Toledo and the city’s South End neighborhood just downstream of a narrow and sharp bend in the Maumee River. Completed in 1896, the long, spindly, truss-design structure got sideways glances almost immediately, and it sustained major weather damage twice before its ultimate demise — once from river ice, the second time from wind. And wind was deemed a major factor when a wayward ship finally took the Fassett bridge down on April 5, 1957. Gusts estimated at 80 mph blew the Champlain, an 8,700-ton lake freighter, from its nearby mooring and sent it crashing into the middle of the bridge, destroying three spans. Two cars were on the bridge at the time, but both made it safely to shore.

3 Things To Know Today
1 Two Bodies Recovered From Site Of Baltimore Bridge Collapse. The remains of two of the construction workers who were missing after the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore Tuesday were found yesterday. The two men found were identified as 35-year-old Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes and 26-year-old Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera; four others are still presumed to be dead after the cargo ship Dali lost power and ran into a bridge support; the six people were part of a construction team who were working on the bridge at the time it collapsed. The two were reportedly found inside a red pickup truck that was trapped in 25 feet of water near the location of the middle of the bridge. Rescue efforts have been suspended, and efforts have now moved to a salvage operation. It was revealed yesterday that the cargo ship Dali had 56 containers of hazardous materials on board when it crashed into the bridge, holding around 760 tons of mostly corrosives, flammables, and “miscellaneous” materials, according to National Transportation Safety Board chair Jennifer Homendy. She went on to say that officials know that some containers were breached during the incident, but that they don’t know how many, nor do they have a timeline to remove the containers.
