JUVENILE TURTLES ‘CRACKLE’ AND ‘POP’ HEAD HOME AFTER REHAB JOURNEY
It was a picture-perfect morning on March 14 as a crowd of hundreds gathered at Sombrero Beach to watch two juvenile green sea turtles complete their journey home. Rescued in November off Cudjoe Key, both turtles, later named “Crackle” and “Pop,” were suffering from fibropapillomatosis, a common disease that can cause extreme tumor growth on the turtles. Their four-month rehabilitation at Marathon’s Turtle Hospital included tumor removal surgeries, broad spectrum antibiotics, fluids, vitamins and a healthy diet of mixed seafood and greens.
Key Colony installs new commissioner
The tiny city of Key Colony Beach has been in the headlines for the past year, mostly because of controversy over whether to renovate or rebuild its hurricane-damaged City Hall. But what transpired at the recent KCB City Commission meeting could hail a return to normalcy. The Thursday, March 21, meeting was the first conducted in the municipal building’s Marble Hall since the middle of 2022. The fate of City Hall had been the centerpiece of ongoing resident unrest and commission disagreements, contributing to an...

Hurricanes' Lavoie outduels Dolphins' Ziels during Monroe County matchup
As always, records, stats, or any prior game of the season can be thrown out when Coral Shores and Marathon High are matched on a schedule. Sure enough, it happened once again as the Coral Shores baseball squad — which has just four wins in 10 contests during the 2024 campaign — headed south to take on Monroe County rival Marathon — which had won 10 of 12 to begin the year — during which Hurricanes starting pitcher Campbell Lavoie was able to go toe-to-toe...
CALLING ALL PRINCESSES: MARATHON COMMUNITY THEATRE TO HOST FAIRYTALE MEET-AND-GREET
In recent weeks, Marathon Community Theatre has received inquiries from young princesses and Disney fans eager to meet their favorite characters. The royal meet-and-greet will include treats and photo ops with all of the show’s princesses. The event is free, but donations to the theater are always greatly appreciated. Performances of ‘Disenchanted!’ are still PG-13 and will continue on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. through April 6. More information and tickets are at marathontheater.org.
Iconic Lorelei sign regains siren status
A casual conversation about construction needs led to a unique opportunity for a local artist. Contractor Dave Jankowski was doing work for Marlene Lindback, owner of the Lorelei Restaurant and Cabana Bar in Islamorada, when she motioned to the iconic mermaid adjacent to U.S. 1 and said it needed work, too. Jankowski replied, “My daughter paints; she’s an artist,” and a plan was hatched. ...
DO YOU HAVE A DRIVER’S LICENSE? ARE YOU SURE?
This might shock those who know me, but on the first day of March … I was officially the bad boy of Marathon. The last thing I expected to see as I pulled into 20th Street to take photos for an article was a set of blue-and-red lights behind me. I went through my normal process – thought about whether I’d been speeding (no), questioned whether maybe I missed a turn signal (no), and hid the gun and kilo of cocaine under the back seat. (That’s obviously a joke – don’t send me angry emails.)
