LOOKING AT THE NATIONAL REGISTER: CC&O Railroad Depot - A center of preservation in Johnson City
(EDITOR’S NOTE: One of my favorite things to do is to drive the roads of Washington County. In the past, I did this with my friend and history companion, Elaine Scott Cantrell. After her passing on Sept. 18, 2021, memories of our trips seem to flood back as I go through photos on Facebook, drive to meetings and/or to work or just when some random thoughts seem to come back. Her work to preserve Washington County’s past was a passion as well as a legacy that she left behind. In recent conversations with people in the community, I felt that maybe taking a look at some of the historic sites in our county might also help develop this passion in others. In addition, understanding the meaning and context behind some of these sites might help you round out a bit of local history that still stands within your own community. It also, I hope, will bring more awareness to the National Register of Historic Places and might bring even more sites to the National Register in our county.)
