Billerica junkyard fire
BILLERICA — On Friday, Sept. 15, many Tewksbury residents saw a plume of thick gray smoke rising into the sky as at least four news helicopters circled overhead. A fire, which started in a 50 by 100 foot corrugated steel structure at Jack’s Used Cars and Parts at 24 Town Farm Lane in Billerica was raging, spewing a dark column of smoke into the air. Reports of the plume came from as far as 1.5 miles away from the site. The scrap yard encompasses approximately 25 acres off of Billerica Avenue and is filled with hundreds of junked cars.

New Bedford Fentanyl Trafficker Sentenced
FALL RIVER (WBSM) — A New Bedford fentanyl trafficker who had also failed to show up for a similar case in another county was sentenced last week to state prison. Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn said Felix Berrios Colon, 42, of New Bedford pleaded guilty in Fall River Superior Court to indictments charging him with trafficking in fentanyl and possession with intent to distribute cocaine.
Authorities announce death of father who attempted to rescue child at Salisbury Beach
Authorities say a 44-year-old man who attempted to rescue his child at Salisbury Beach was pronounced dead after he was recovered by emergency crews. The Essex District Attorney’s Office said 44-year-old Gary Simard of Methuen originally went into the water on Wednesday to try and rescue one of his children after they were pulled from the shoreline.

Andover Joins Communities with West Nile Virus-Positive Mosquitoes: What Residents Need to Know
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) reported a mosquito sample from Andover testing positive for the West Nile Virus (WNV). The Northeast Massachusetts Mosquito Control and Wetlands Management District collected the sample on September 18, 2023. The state lab in Jamaica Plains carried out the tests.
