Doyon appeals decision on proposed hotel development
Alaska Native corporation Doyon, Limited filed an appeal on March 1, after the Homer Planning Commission rejected its application for a controversial planned unit development. Located at the base of the Homer Spit at what was called Lighthouse Village, the proposed development includes a hotel, employee housing and five triplexes.
Community members raise concerns about airport project and tractor purchase
Members of the public attended Tuesday night’s Homer city council meeting and commented about the upcoming repaving project at the Homer Airport. Aleutian Airways is one of many businesses affected by the project. It recently began offering flights between Homer and Anchorage last fall. General manager Brian Whilden says the narrow runway that will be in place during the project is too small for the airline’s plane.

Clarion, Homer News owner changes hands to Mississippi-based media group
The parent company behind three Alaska newspapers has officially been sold to a group of investors, after filing for creditor protection to avoid bankruptcy in January. Black Press Media is the parent company of Sound Publishing, which owns the Peninsula Clarion, Homer News and Juneau Empire. In addition to those three Alaska papers, Black Press publishes 94 newspapers in Canada, 35 publications in Washington state and six newspapers in Hawaii.

A study looking into expanding Homer Harbor may get federal funding for the next fiscal year after losing it for this year. Two new policies regarding civil trespassing and public records requests are on the table in the Kenai Peninsula Borough, after officials say one individual harassed borough employees and burdened others with excessive requests. The Alaska House of Representatives took a step towards raising the state’s age of consent from 16 to 18 years old on Friday.
Local artist displays work that's never truly complete
Inside the college’s Gary L. Freeburg gallery, onlookers of the show “Cranial Pathways” will find about twenty pieces of art that resemble a mix of ceramic work and wax paintings. The unusual medium, known as encaustic or hot wax, allows an artist to manipulate beeswax, resin and pigments by heating them with a small torch on a canvas. The art form’s root word ‘caustic’ means ‘to burn in’.
Alaska Department of Fish and Game announces sport fishery closures
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game announced multiple king salmon sport fishery closures and restrictions in Cook Inlet for the upcoming season earlier this month. The department is closing king salmon sport fisheries in Cook Inlet saltwaters north of Bluff Point near Homer, and the Kenai River from May 1 to Aug. 15.

Tonight is the opening night of Guys and Dolls, put on by The Homer High School Concert Choir, and the Kenai Peninsula Economic Development District will host a meet-and-greet with local lending institutions this Friday [03/22] at Kenai River Brewing Company in Soldotna, and the remaining tiger at the Alaska Zoo died last week, according to an announcement from zoo officials.
Homer High School seniors recognized as National Merit Scholarship finalists
Three Homer High School seniors qualified as National Merit Scholarship finalists this year after taking their PSAT — a common standardized test for students thinking of going to college — and completing a demanding application. That's an honor bestowed to just over 15,000 top scorers out of over a million test takers, or about 1% of students.
Homer Airport to have multiple closures for repaving
The Homer Airport will have nightly closures beginning next month for a repaving project from Quality Asphalt Paving and the Alaska Department of Transportation. The airport’s closures begin in April and will run for six months. The airport will stay open during the day before closing every night at 8 p.m. for 12 hours. There will also be several multi-day closures, with the first happening from April 15 to the morning of April 21.

City of Homer terminates contract with city manager
The City of Homer is ending its contract with City Manager Rob Dumouchel. The city made its decision last Thursday during a special session of the city council. The council will hold a work session in the future to discuss finding a new city manager. In the meantime, City Clerk Melissa Jacobsen will fill in as the Acting Interim City Manager.
