RICHMOND, Va. – Virginia House Republicans voted down a range of bills that would have added new restrictions on firearms.

Among the measures defeated in a marathon subcommittee meeting Thursday was from Charlottesville Democratic Delegate Sally Hudson, which would have made it unlawful to carry a firearm in any building owned or operated by a public college or university.

Timothy Longo, the Police Chief of the University of Virginia, where a campus shooting on November 13th left three football players dead and two other students injured, testified in support of the measure.

Representatives for the Virginia Citizens Defense League and National Rifle Association spoke against the bill.

The Public Safety subcommittee defeated the bill on a party-line 6-4 vote.
